This is a crossover vignette, set after the "Earth: Final Conflict" episode "If I Could Read Your Mind". Since "Earth: Final Conflict" is set in the next century (sometime around 2011 or so, I'd guess, for first season), it occurs long after the events of the "Tomorrow People" series. This may or may not be comprehensible to someone who is not familiar with at least the premise of both series.
Jade lay in the circular 'doorway' that marked the division between the main room and the adjoining hallway of the Ship. even though there were a lot more Tomorrow People than there had been when she had broken out. In the main room, the column dimly shone. It had been that way since the Taelons had come. She missed its strong presence, but maybe it had a good reason to be that way.
Shortly after the column had gone mostly silent, Adam had asked all of them, each and every Tomorrow Person, to be careful as possible.A few people had objected, saying that surely a race as connected as the Taelons would be in favor of another group of telepathic beings. However, after a month of two of the column's action, or lack thereof, pretty much everyone agreed to be careful. It wasn't time to reveal themselves, not yet, until they were sure the Taelons were on their side.
They seemed to be. She'd seen the two North America-based Companions when she was in Boston last week attending the International Composium of Psychic Sciences. She was the one who had been sent because of her long interest in such things. It had been a thrill to see a Companion close up, though. the aliens were as graceful as they had been rumored to be. She hadn't dared to get too close, though.
She was saddened by the death of Katya Patrenko. The woman was powerful, she could tell when she'd met her. They'd shook hands just a few hours before Katya died, and the woman had looked her in the eyes, and said, "Don't worry. Someday they will understand, and you will be free." And something in the woman's eyes made her believe that a better future would come to pass.
Now Katya was dead, and Jade mourned her death, despite barely knowing her. With her death, debate among Jade's kind had flared. Those who insisted that the Taelons were accepting of the psychic individuals argued, as usual, for revealing themselves, at least to the Taelons. But those of them opposed to the idea were talking about a quiet crackdown on the psychics by the Taelons, and the likelyhood that Katya had been ordered killed under orders by them. The Taelons would see the Tomorrow People as a threat, despite the fact that the Tomorrow People didn't seem to be able to 'hear' them at all.
Jade had finally blocked the debate out, banished it to the back of her mind. She didn't feel that either side was right, but neither was either side really wrong. This wasn't like the parasites that she'd faced when she was breaking out. These beings, whatever their reasons, were benevolent. But they were mysteries, too, and she didn't want to endanger her life, her husband's, her daughter's, and everyone else's, just in case they were even more paranoid about human telepaths than humans were.
And maybe Katya was right. Maybe they would all understand one day. Maybe someday she wouldn't have to hide. But not now. Not if they planned to survive.
