Some Thoughts on the "Destruction... And After" fic series

It all seemed so simple when I proposed it. After all, some prolific authors seem to manage to write 30-100 k fics per week with no problem; why shouldn't I? I wasn't requiring myself to write the same thing day after day, just tackling those ideas that I wanted to do.

Easier said than done. I tackled all the ideas I wanted, although not quite as much as I wanted. Sometimes ideas didn't want to come out; sometimes I was stuck writing some really awful stuff because I couldn't get the whole idea out. And some of them are awfully short, because I hate being repetitive; I had to pad things out in novel-writing class in college and absolutely hated it.

And, eventually, I took one look and realized that I was only prolonging my suffering and, probably, my readers'. So, twenty-two fics later, I gave up, letting Zhane's and Ashley's conversation in "Morning People" finish off the saga. Perhaps someday I will look back at this buch of fics with the nice air of nostalgia, but right now, with the exception of a few of them, I'm a bit embarrassed by the lot. All are, more or less, exactly what I typed in that evening.

Still, there are a few that I do like - "Vote of Confidence", the opener. "The Faith Not To Stop", my take on Andros' and Ashley's talk before Andros goes off to talk to his sister. (I just wish I'd known about the kiss when I wrote that.) "The Dawn Before Fighting", the longest and most coherent of all of them, and my best take on Zhane. "Endless Ocean", which I like for Ashley's thoughts. And "Morning People", which finally tackles the Andros/Ashley relationship.

Of course, your favorites may vary from mine - sometimes it seems that the fics that I like are always my worst ones. And maybe you'll agree. If you haven't read the fics, do so, just to see what to do and not to do when trying a stunt like this.

And, yes, I'm not finished with the "Space" gang. For one thing, I want to cover the scene I missed somewhere in here with Andros and Ashley dealing with their future plans. This may be a short piece, unless these two take off. And there may be other adventures, during and after the series, that I may still strand them in. They're a good crew.

With that, I'll leave you to check out "Destruction... And After".
