This is a "missing scene" piece. It takes place during "Revelations of Gold", before the scene where the Rangers return to find out if the golden power has transfered to Billy.
It didn't work.
Billy withdrew his hand from the golden staff, trying to comprehend why its power didn't transfer to him. The Treys looked equally confused. He was sure it would work, he was worthy, what had happened.
He ran to the console and scanned himself. He waited impatiently for the readings, hoping against hope that something hadn't made him ineligible as a Power Ranger. Or at least made him ineligible for the golden power, anyway.
The rest of the occupants of the chamber were silent. Zordon and Alpha had known him long enough to know how he worked, and Trey must have been quiet out of respect.
It was kind of a desperate hope - something purely temporary that could be cleared up fast before the golden powers gave out. He owed it to Trey to fix this problem fast. Of course, he was good at fast solutions. Had to be, to survive so long battling so many monsters.
He looked at the readouts. Everything normal, but - negative protons? He thought that had to do with antimatter, in which case he should be dead. Unless the leftover effects of being a Ranger had somehow saved him. He turned around and spoke. "Odd. The only thing that's abnormal is a high amount of negative protons."
"Ay-yi-yi! That could be interfering with the transfer!" Alpha squeaked.
The three Treys looked grim. One of them spoke. "If you are right, Billy, then that must be blocking the power. There is no other way to explain it."
"Which means that the gold power can't be transferred to me," Billy said. "We'll have to find someone else to transfer the power to."
"And fast," Alpha said.
"Unless I could find a way to cleanse myself- and that would probably not be in time."
Alpha patted him on the shoulder. "I'm sorry, Billy."
Billy shrugged. He didn't have time to be depressed about his personal misfortune, not with so much riding on the transfer. "I'm sorry, too, Alpha," he said. "We just have to hope the others get back soon."
He turned back to the computers, too busy to notice the Rangers teleport back in.
