Author's Note: I wrote this as a possible lead-in to a set of stories. I still don't know if I'll write the stories, but here's a small taste.
Prelude to Invasion
by Selma McCrory
copyright 1999
He had seen it coming, but no one had believed him. Now, they were coming. They were coming to invade.
George sat on the balcony, looking up at the stars. A lot people were, tonight. Foolish. Idiotic. Couldn't they see that they were welcoming their own conqerors?
"People of Earth, we are the Companions." Hah. A sweet name to hide deadly intentions. Were people blind enough to accept them?
He had tried to warn them in 1972, when Jenny Hayden's child was born. Scott Hayden was no doubt out there, somewhere, waiting for his people to arrive. Hail the conquering hero. Hail the one who managed to deceive them all.
Where were those two? Surely they'd come out and welcome their bretheren. He wondered what they really looked like without their deceptive forms. He had seen many, many people be fooled by a facade of kindness and caring.
But he wasn't fooled then and he wouldn't be fooled now. No matter how friendly these being claimed to be, he knew. And he would fight against them.
Alone, if needed. Alone, he would carry on the fight.
